The following are Pitt HRTP requirements for training:

Short-term training

  1. Written approval of Dr. Bernard Groosjohan, Dean of the UCM Schools of the Health Sciences.
  2. Identification of a local mentor with research experience and funding in the training area. A mentor at the site where the training will take place is also required.
  3. The use of Mozambican specimens and/or data for the research project.
  4. Completion of a form that includes information about the proposed training and, for training that involves a research project, a brief description of the project.
  5. For training involving research, the approval letter (in Portuguese is fine) from the local institutional review board must be provided. Studies involving animals involve also require separate animal review board approval.
  6. Training in responsible conduct of research and submission of the curriculum vitae is required before travel arrangements can be made.
  7. Acknowledgment of NIH support in any subsequent presentations or publications that result from the supported training: “This work was supported in part by a Fogarty International Center HIV Research Training Program grant, National Institutes of Health, to the University of Pittsburgh (D43TW009753).”
  8. Upon completion of the training, a brief report that outlines the dates and place of training, name and title of the mentor, the skills learned, results of the project, and difficulties encountered, if any.

Degree training

1. Written approval of Dr. Bernard Groosjohan, Dean of the UCM Schools of the Health Sciences.

2. Current degree in the health sciences

3. Acceptable academic performance as required by the degree program of the department to which the candidate will apply

4. Two letters of recommendation

5. Candidate statement letter that demonstrates commitment to HIV research career at UCM-CIDI

6. Evidence that applicant will make future contributions in HIV prevention research at UCM-CIDI.

7. A score of at least 550 (written test) or 80 (Internet test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (ets.org/toefl) (applicants to Anglophone institutions only)

8. Adequate performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (ets.org/gre) (applicants to U.S. institutions only).

9. Training in responsible conduct of research is required before travel arrangements can be made. In addition to online training, degree trainees must also complete classroom instruction at the institution where the degree will be obtained.

10. Acknowledgment of NIH support in any subsequent presentations or publications that result from the supported training: “This work was supported in part by a Fogarty International Center HIV Research Training Program grant, National Institutes of Health, to the University of Pittsburgh (D43TW009753).”

11. Following each year of training, a brief report is required that includes the dates and place of training, type of degree program, the name and title of the advisor, a transcript for the academic work completed to date, and a summary of the status of the training (including difficulties encountered, if any).
